We invite all to an open pitching event organised under the WeAlmaty project where ten teams will compete for 5,000 euro grants!

Jury: decisions on all grants will be made by the Jury comprising representatives of the project partners: British Council, Akimat of Almaty, KBTU and ADC.
Presentation format (pitching): 5-minute presentation, 2 minutes for questions from the Jury. Total: 7 minutes for each team. 

The objective of the competition is to secure tangible results in the development of Almaty through implementation of civil initiatives in cooperation with the local administration and private sector, in line with the priorities of the programme of Almaty development until 2020. 

The competition is organised as part of the WeAlmaty project whose goal is to help Almaty to implement its programme of development until 2020 in the fields of culture, business and civil activism through the development of civic society. The project is being implemented with the EU funding of €430,000.

The competition’s grants aim to:

  • encourage citizens of Almaty to come up with and implement social and economic projects and mobilise resources necessary for sustainable development of Almaty;
  • promote partnership between the public, private and civic sectors in Almaty; and
  • test innovative financing mechanisms which should enhance sustainability of social projects.

Prize fund: at least six prizes, €5,000 each, for five winning teams. More winners can be named, however, and in such a case the prize sum per team will be lesser. One grant of up to €5,000 will go to the best project proposed by members of the city initiative workshop. 

Winning projects will be announced the same day.

Project Description
Rocket Plastic, a workshop that processes plastic wastes into finished products
  1. Give plastic a second life in accordance with the concept “from short-term to long-term”
  2. Develop a market of eco-friendly products through its own online platform
  3. Promote the zero waste, sorting and recycling principles as a lifestyle among adults and children
  4. Manufacture machines for plastic processing for private buyers
  5. Create a community and join efforts for fighting plastic wastes
The Faces of WeAlmaty Create an information and dialogue platform for encouraging city initiatives and developing activist communities in Almaty.
Eco-Scan (working name), a mobile application The mission of this application is to grow a generation of eco-conscious citizens through teaching the rules of separate waste collection and principles of conscious consumption and buying. 
The purpose of Eco-Scan is to help people who start to learn the principles of waste sorting.

Red Line, a network of pedestrian walkways

Develop a concept of uninterrupted pleasure walkways in the city and a concept of urban development in such areas. Create a prototype of urban development for the whole city.
Young Community Leaders Eye-catching city interventions for drawing attention to the problem of child-hostile megalopolises
- Support and promote student communities
- Develop soft skills in young people

Smart Stations

The goal of the team is to build smart heated stations which should highlight the identity of our city, enhance comfort for citizens and provide a unique space for advertisers.
To date, one of the priorities of our country is digitalization. This project is fully in line with the Digital Kazakhstan state programme, since smart stations will function on an electronic platform which will make them totally autonomous. Our team supports the Akimat’s concept City for People and wishes to make a contribution to the achievement of this common goal.
ALAguide, an application for tourists and guides The idea is that every tourist arriving in our city will download this mobile application for free, select an interface language, register as a tourist, and select a guide they like based on rating, cost, tour themes and other personal preferences. Then the application will send a request directly to the selected guide duly registered with the system, and the customer will instantly receive an answer. All history will be saved on our servers for future registration and data processing. The application is meant to be self-funding, as fees will be charged for completed orders.
Comfortable Area for the Blind Create an area without barriers for blind and vision-impaired citizens in 10 social infrastructure institutions in Alatau district of Almaty within 6 months of 2019.
Almaty Oasis Draw young people’s attention to the problem of environmental contamination with plastic and gas wastes.
Five Tales of Umai, five Tours with Umai, five Animated Films about Wizard Umai   Create a new tourist product based on Kazakh legends, myths and tales, and later animated films with beautiful and kind characters, which have already appeared in a book and an audiobook in four languages. 
Publish five tales featuring mythical Kazakh heroes in a new format. 
Creating five thematic tours.
Citizen Playground (Microclub 3:0) Under this project, our studio Citizen Space will jointly with our partners study the possibility of decentralizing the city’s culture and providing leisure opportunities for citizens in non-central public areas.
City farm in the Botanic Garden Create the first demonstrational city farm in Almaty for creating and strengthening the city farming culture.
