Workshop of City Initiatives

As part of the “WeAlmaty” project, according to the results of the competition, active residents of Almaty were selected to participate in the sessions of the Workshop of City Initiatives. In an interactive format, participants passed facilitation programs on skills of social leadership, active civic engagement, effective communication and the creation of social projects. The seminars discussed startups to develop the local economy and increase the sustainability of creative and social entrepreneurship in Almaty.

The program of the workshop of city initiatives was based on the Active Citizens program, which has been successfully applied by the British Council in 54 countries of the world, including Europe, Asia, America and Africa.

The workshop was conducted by project facilitators trained by the Active Citizens program in Kazakhstan and the UK. All facilitators are experienced trainers selected during an open competition in the summer of 2017.

The workshop project took place in several stages. In December 2017 - January 2018, the facilitators of the project held the first workshop of urban initiatives, in which 45 people participated. The participants formed teams and participated in the competition of projects “We Almaty”.

November 3-4, 2018 The first phase of the second (and final) set of the Workshop was held, in which 84 city dwellers took part. The topics of discussion included issues of urban activism seeking social effect in a business model, ways of effective communication with the city administration, and others.

Finally, November 24-25, 2018 The final stage of the Workshop of City Initiatives took place, which completed a two-year program to enhance the competencies of residents of Almaty. In the final stage, 63 people took part.

In total, 7 facilitators and about 200 citizens were trained as part of the Workshop on City Initiatives.
